Microsoft may be preparing to raise the price of Xbox Game Pass, its popular game subscription service, according to recent reports from reliable industry insiders. The potential price increase could affect both Game Pass for Console and Game Pass Ultimate, which includes access to PC, Xbox, and cloud gaming, along with additional perks.

Although Microsoft has not officially confirmed the change, sources familiar with the company’s strategy suggest the new pricing structure could be introduced as early as mid to late 2025. This would mark the second significant price adjustment in recent years, following the hike in 2023 that sparked strong community reactions but did little to slow the platform’s growth.

With major titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Starfield, and Avowed slated to launch day-one on Game Pass, the value proposition remains high. However, Microsoft may be looking to balance the rising costs of content development and third-party licensing by gradually increasing subscription fees.

Analysts point to several factors driving the potential change:

  • Inflation and rising operating costs

  • Increased content output from Xbox’s growing studio lineup

  • The integration of Activision Blizzard titles into Game Pass

If the price hike does happen, it would likely come with additional incentives to soften the impact—such as exclusive game bundles, enhanced cloud features, or longer trial periods for new subscribers. Some sources also hint that Microsoft may introduce a new tiered pricing model, offering more flexibility for different types of gamers.

Reactions from the gaming community have been mixed. While many acknowledge the tremendous value that Game Pass provides, especially with first-party titles available on launch day, others worry that continued price increases could alienate budget-conscious players.

Xbox Game Pass remains a cornerstone of Microsoft’s long-term gaming ecosystem strategy, and any pricing changes are expected to be positioned as necessary for sustaining high-quality content delivery. The company has recently reiterated its commitment to building a broad, accessible gaming platform—but that accessibility may soon come at a slightly higher monthly cost.

Until Microsoft makes an official announcement, current subscribers are encouraged to keep an eye on their billing dates and renewal terms, and consider locking in annual rates if available.
